An American Tradition
Clog dancing is one of our oldest folk traditions, originating in the
Appalachian Mountains and spreading throughout the US
Clogging is uniquely American with roots found in a wide variety of ethnic
groups. The influences of English step dancing, Irish jigs, German high kicks,
Indian ceremonial dances and the buck dances of Black Americans are all evident
in clogging as it is done now. Today cloggers wear taps on their shoes to
produce the percussive sound that was originally created by early Americans who
dance in heavy shoes on wooden floors. The difference between clogging and tap
dancing is the constant shuffle of the standing foot. While a free foot does a
variety of kicks, stomps and scuffs (including the rapid fire double-toe), the
weight bearing foot slides back and forth keeping the beat of the music.
On the Move.....
This award winning group is available to perform at fairs, festivals,
meetings, and conventions. Throughout Central Illinois, the Sugar Creek Cloggers are
known for their high energy dancers who will delight you with their enthusiasm
for this floor-slappin', toe-tappin', hand-clappin' dance called clogging.
